More paraffinic, saturated and stable, offering obvious benefits in the viscosity index, volatility, oxidation and thermal stability, Group III base oils make cost-effective alternatives to premium Group II oils and PAOs.
Although not chemically engineered, Group III base oils offer good performance in a wide range of attributes as well as good molecular uniformity and stability. They are commonly mixed with additives and marketed as synthetic or semi-synthetic products.
In following environmental issues, today’s regulations in developed countries, force OEM to produce advanced engine technologies and this puts certain requirements on lubricant producers and base oil standards increasing demand for lower viscosity grades in most engine oil formulations. As a result, the industry experts forecast that while Group I base oils will continue to be the most utilised oil in the next 8-10 years, the combined demand for Group II and Group III base oils will exceed Group I demand by 2030.
